Young Eagles

Somehow, a couple years ago when we put up the purple martin house, I got to talking to the lady at the water company and the subject of birds came up.  She's had martins at her farm for years and she was happy to share information and tips and we've compared notes since.

This spring when I stopped in, we talked martins for a couple minutes and then she excitedly told me they had a nesting pair of eagles on the river bordering their farm.  What?!?  She had some pictures to show and told me where we could find the nest.

Of course during lambing and baby Biscuit time I couldn't get away to go look.  When I stopped in the other day, I'd assumed the babies would have already fledged.  No, but they were close.  Tim and I headed to the river that afternoon.

The nest was easy to spot.  It's huge!  Probably three feet deep?  Maybe five feet across?

And yep, there's a young eagle.

Two eagles!

You should be able to click to biggify these pictures.

We've not had bald eagles around here until the last couple of year.  Very exciting!

Poor Saint Tim is not out fishing today, rather working his butt off getting stuff caught up around the farm.  We've both had a busy spring.  Maybe the predicted storms will hold off this afternoon and he can make a Father's Day dash to the river.

Needs must. Rick is at Lowe's picking up parts for the pressure tank so we can have running water again....

Very cool! Glad you got to see them before they left. We have Montezuma Swamp wildlife refuge a couple hours east of us. I drove through it last weekend and many of the big T shaped electric towers had osprey nests on top.

I've seen ospreys here, and any number of water birds, but no eagles. Oh my- their nests are huge! How exciting for you all. And how peaceful your river looks. No gators, right?

Oddly, there are nesting eagles in the park outside my condo in the city, but none here in the valley. We are on the 12th floor and it is always a sight to see them fly by.

We have the same boards for paddling. We don't use them for fishing but rather just to get out on the river with and they are great for hauling the dogs around as well. Eagles certainly build HUGE nests!

Very impressive! Thank you for the photos and I hope St. Tim gets some fishing time.

Very cool! And you got photos, yea! Their nests are amazingly huge. There has been pair(s) nesting high on the canyon wall in Queen's Canyon at Glen Eyrie for 100+- years. It's so high you could never see in to it - so it's cool to see your photos! I haven't been back since the fire, so thanks for the post ~ I see a much needed break in the near future :-)

Very cool getting to see the little (?) eagles. Not so little! They do look fierce!

That is an amazing nest! I am also glad that it is not on your farm, as I would be worried about small lambies and the Adventure Chickens. Not to mention my favorite cat in the world, Betsy.
